BMCAA Uncon 2022 | OssoVR: Medical Illustration Leading the Surgical Training Renaissance

Presenting at BMCAA’s Uncon 2022!

Each year, the University of Toronto's Biomedical Communications Alumni Association organizes Uncon, a gathering that brings together industry leaders and students to delve into medical illustration industry hot topics. It was an absolute honor for me to share the stage with my esteemed colleagues, Dan Hermansen, and Farah Hamade, at this event.

Description of talk: Osso VR is the leading virtual reality (VR) surgical training and assessment platform, with a mission to improve patient outcomes, increase the adoption of higher-value medical technologies, and democratize global access to the latest surgical techniques. To do all of this, we rely on the incredible talents of 200+ people—including the largest medical illustration team in the world. Working in our MedTech and Art Department teams, medical illustrators help design clinically accurate VR modules and create the anatomy, surgical instruments, and environments that bring our procedures to life. Join us as we discuss the role of medical illustrators at Osso VR so that you get to knOsso!

About the speakers: Dan Hermansen was the first medical illustrator hired at Osso, and currently works as the Director of Clinical Design, reviewing VR clinical training design decisions and works in progress to ensure experiential accuracy and consistency. Man-San Ma is a Senior Organic Artist and Farah Hamade is an Organic Artist. Both are BMC alumni who work as part of the Art Department, which is responsible for crafting the amazing anatomy, tools and environments that set Osso apart. Live demonstration

While the presentation was virtual, I was able to go on-site after to do a live demo of Osso’s Tibial Nail procedure with Alexander Young. The attendees had great questions about who our audience was, how we developed our procedures, and generally what it is to work at Osso! It was awesome to see everyone excited about our modules.
